A Guide On Vehicle Dyno Tuning

Dyno tuning helps measure the horsepower, torque, top speed and quality of the air-fuel mixture in a vehicle. During a dyno tune, the car is placed on an engine dynamometer. This is a machine that operates the vehicle's engine to give a road-like effect. The device contains a console that indicates the various parameters of your engine. During the tune, the mechanic will make adjustments to your vehicle's ECU to optimise its performance. Read this excerpt to learn more about dyno tuning.

How To Prepare For A Dyno Tune

Your vehicle will run under severe stress during the dyno tune. Therefore, your mechanic will need to conduct a pre-inspection and perform minor repairs before the car goes to the dyno. The checks include:

  • The mechanic will check the quality of engine and transmission oil in your vehicle. If the vehicle is due for service, you may have to change these oils.
  • The air filtration system must be perfect; otherwise, the car will have an improper air-fuel mixture.
  • Your mechanic will assess the engine block for signs of wear or cracks. A cracked block could shatter under severe stress.
  • The mechanic will conduct a compression test to check the condition of the pistons, valves and piston ring.
  • When using a chassis dyno, your car tyres must be in excellent condition, so they will be checked as well.
  • Your vehicle should not have any oil leaks. Otherwise, you will incur an extra cleaning fee after the dyno session.
  • The car should have sufficient fuel. Do not use fuel additives and performance fuels if you do not use them on your vehicle.

What to Expect During The Dyno Tune

Before the dyno tune, your mechanic will want to know your expectations. For instance, do you want to increase torque, horsepower or fuel consumption of the car? He or she will check the current performance of your vehicle and compare it against the manufacturer's specifications. This will help him or her identify the horsepower and torque that your vehicle has lost since manufacture. Various parameters will affect the tuning process. For example, a vehicle with a large turbo, heavy-duty engine block and performance fuel and air intake systems can be tuned to produce additional horsepower. On the other hand, the mechanic will be cautious when tuning a vehicle in stock condition. Too much power could damage the vehicle's engine.

As a rule, dyno tuning should be done by experienced professionals. Check car forums and the internet to identify reputable tuners in your area.
